TCA Sneak Peek - Opportunity Knocks
How well do you really know your family? Ashton Kutcher wants to find out.
Kutcher joined his co-producers onstage at the TCAs to present their new reality game show Opportunity Knocks, a light-hearted home invasion where family members win money and prizes by answering questions about the people that are closest to them. Could you name your wife’s favorite song? Do you know who was the first girl your son ever kissed? Could you correctly identify a piece of art your daughter made?
While developing the show, Kutcher sat around the dinner table with Demi and the kids and played a custom made home version of the game with them for a couple of bucks in prize money. “It really has encouraged me to make a greater effort to learn more about the people I spend every day with,” Kutcher said.
Kutcher snacked on red gummy bears as he took questions from the press . “This show promotes people getting to know their family more than had they not watched it,” Kutcher said
Imagine this: Host J.D. Roth and his camera crews show up at your house unannounced during the day and ask you and your family if you’d like to play a little game. Sure, why not? “That’s when the circus rolls into town,” Roth said. Twelve semi-trucks and an army of 150 technicians and engineers are waiting for the go-ahead one street over. Within hours, they’ve erected a huge game show set with all the bells and whistles right on your front lawn and all your neighbors and friends become the audience. Then the pressure is on and the game begins.
What I like about the show concept is that it tackles in a light-hearted way the social isolation many of us deal with in this age of technological distractions. “You realize you’ve got to get to know your kids,” Roth said. “You’ve got to pull them away from all the distractions and just talk to them. You can learn a lot. And that’s what the show is about. It’s about that family dynamic - how well do you know your family?”
I wonder how well I’d do on the show. I’d like to think I’d be able to pick out my daughter’s favorite stuffed animal or something like that. At least, I hope I could, particularly with prizes like a new car or a fridge on the line.
But how well would Ashton Kutcher himself do on Opportunity Knocks? “I don’t know that I would do that well, I gotta be honest,” he said. Kutcher thinks that moms would naturally be better at the show than dads since they’re more observant and plugged in to the daily details of family life.
Okay, but what about Demi? Kutcher admits she’d do way better than he would. As he popped another gummy bear in his mouth, Kutcher said, “Demi would demolish it.”

I LOVE the idea for this show! BUt it'd freak me out if a semi of prizes arrived and I had to answer questions about my family. That's when you REALLY wish you paid attention to the name of your daughter's gym teacher or son's favorite band, right??!
