Anna Fricke on The Girl Who Cried Wolf, Part 1
Airdate: 11/09/07
WARNING! SPOILER ALERT!
There is no way to talk about this episode without giving away everything… except for what happens in the NEXT episode. And a lot happens in this episode, so settle in, people. Welcome to the wedding –part one! Episodes 5 and 6 of this season were originally conceived as a two-part finale to our first season. But, things happen, as this episode proves.
I know, you’re thinking to yourself… not only is Annie’s mom a hilarious drunk and Patrick is the most devoted groom ever, but what’s this about Jack taking off for the Bering Sea? How could we do this?! Have him leave, just when things were looking good for our heroes? How can we interrupt this budding romance! Because, people. The man is a fish and game biologist and he’s dreamt his whole life of studying whales on a research vessel in the Bering Sea, okay? This is what life is like in Elmo, Alaska. It’s unpredictable. Unless you’re Mai, who thinks she can predict everything.
Mai’s dream was a piece of the puzzle that came into play fairly late in the breaking of this episode. When this episode became part of a two-parter, we needed something dramatic to tie the episodes together. And what better way to do that than an ominous dream? You will have to stay tuned to see if Mai is, in fact, psychic. Disaster certainly seems to ensue. This is what happens so often at weddings. Everyone strives so vigorously for everything to go right that something inevitably goes wrong. In this episode, everyone is on the precipice of something: a wedding, a departure, leaving the church, taking a drink – just how long can you keep it together before the universe pulls everything apart? Mai and Celia have a mystical secret between them in the form of The Curse. Is the curse real? Is it better to know or not to know when disaster is imminent?
Which is how our radio question comes into play: how do you know when to give up the fight? It might be noble to say never, but can we all be so steadfast when the wolf is at the door? Is it time for Marin to let go of having a relationship with Jack? Has Annie given up on her dream wedding too soon? Did Sara and Eric make a mistake? Is it time for Mary Alice to give up on her own marriage? These are all things that will be addressed and amplified (yes MORE, much more happens!) in the next episode. For now the best we can do is hope that Marin makes it out of this particular scrape alive. And Domino Dan – of course we all have our fingers crossed for Domino Dan.
A few things of note: cats aren’t very easy to train. Nor are eyebrows easy to make disappear. And incidentally, for fans of both shows – we know that Dr. Christina Yang waxed her eyebrows off on “Grey’s Anatomy” right before her own botched wedding. We know. This episode was written long before that one aired. But, as Mai (and the bell at the Elmo Inn) shows us in this episode, some things are quite simply beyond our control.
Anna

great episode!
But what happened to the strike blog that was posted earlier in the week that is not on the website now?

~~~Another great job guys!
This one will be on the dvr for some time. I cannot wait to watch it again.
I'm always amazed by how much material you squeeze into one delightful hour.
As much as I loved Sara & Ben together, Sara&Eric are perfect for each other.
So happy to see them in each other's arms.
If the two~parter was written as the season finale I can only imagine what cliff you will be leaving us hanging from in Part II. What could be more dramatic than Marin clutching Dan to her chest
surrounded by a pack of wolves????
As usual, next Friday cannot come soon enough!
Thanks for the smiles, tears, & goosebumps,
KT
ps. Anna, I must be the one person on the planet not watching "Grey's". Interesting note about the
eyebrow s/l.
I loved this episode - as with all the rest. Mai was priceless with all of her rituals and superstitions. I can't believe that Jack pulled back from that kiss when he's so desperately wanted to do just that for so long. Didn't Annie rip off her left eyebrow? It looked like she had a scar over her right one for the rest of the episode - and lopsided pencilled back in brows?. What was with that? I keep loving Pastor Eric more and more. I hope he sticks around a long time for Sara. They have amazing chemistry. I hope that the church board comes to its senses and begs him to come back even if he and Sara do "do it". Hey, where has Buzz been? He should be involved with all the hilarious wedding shennanigans. Keep up the great work. Can't wait for next week....
It's exciting to watch all the different story lines unfold. The Sarah story line is compelling. The Mai/Celia relationship is hilarious and naturally weddings are always interesting. My only disappointment is the Jack/Marin status. After they decided they needed time apart, there are so many scenes where they are constantly together or hanging out only to arrive at the same decision of taking a break. This is fine but let's give these characters some other things to do (instead of corny scenes of them getting back together-Marin's dream, or almost kissing and having Jack say he can't go there).
Jack and Marin got together on a whim, based on pure chemistry. Those scenes were fun and that's what made us root for them. Now their scenes are no longer fun. Bring it back. Now they are both so pained to be around each other. Can't they get lost in the woods one night, get drunk and have some magic happen? What about bringing Marin's ex-fiance Graham back? Why is it all about Jack? She was a New Yorker with a full life was she not? Where are all her former friends? Her crazy sister?
i'll say some things are beyond our control! they usurped MIT with a stupid basketball game! the curses that flew from this house towards the skies. whew, we just finished watching on-line. THANK YOU! we want Marin & Jack's relationship to be strong enough to withstand a 9 month separation. we want Annie & Patrick to have a wonderful wedding. We want the bar to re-open; we want the stupid people of Elmo to realize how un-Christian they are acting towards Sarah & Eric. AND we want the cat to not scratch Marin to pieces!
Whoa--the ending to that episode left me in tears--worried about Annie and Marin--I can't wait til the next episode. It can't come quick enough.
Such a great episode... and the cliffhanger... I like I actually said out loud " NO WAY!"
great job to the writers and everyone else on set!
this show is Amazing!
I was so glad to see this episode. I feel like the show has finally gotten back on a path that makes "sense." And this week's blog confirms what I had been feeling - these episodes were written for the end of last season and SHOULD HAVE BEEN AIRED LAST SEASON. I'm really looking forward to next week and the rest of Season 2 now that we're back on track, or off track, or getting married, or not getting married, or whatever happens next...
I must say I love this show.(Writers you have done good)I hope that Marin and Jack do get together for those of us who aren't lucky enough to find our Jack the viewers have the right to dream don't we? And if they don't this season hopefully they will next season after 9 months apart.
AWESOME AS ALWAYS!! Cash returns!!YEA!! Maybe in the nick of time to save Marin and Domino Dan! Ha! Hilarious with a pillow tied to his back! Jack gone for 9 months? How can this be? He and Marin obviously have chemistry, I agree, the woods, some booze, and let nature take its course! Sara and Eric, I believe you can't fight the attraction, we all are human! Maybe those who are judging them will realize it really is not their place? I hope the wedding ends blissfully,and there's lots of lovin' chemistry flying around,and by all means the Chieftain MUST reopen!!GREAT writing! I LOVE THIS SHOW!!! Hooked on MIT!* Keep it comin'***********P.S.I'm excited to see Jane and Plow Guy next week! 6 MORE DAYS!!!!!!!! Thankx for our weekly trip to ELMO!*!*
Wow! I just watched online. I can't believe that ending. I sure hope that cat stays in Marin's arms! Great cat-acting, and great wolf/dog-acting, too! I find it hard to believe that the wolves would act like that, though, but it does make for a good cliffhanger. I think Cash will show up and save the day. I'm glad you brought him back - I can see (I think) where the writers are going with this, and I think I kind of like it. He's charming, in a lone wolf kind of way. Jack is, too, but I think you're right - if he and Marin got together right away, it wouldn't be believable!
PS: I do watch Grey's Anatomy, too, and I thought of the eyebrow thing - BUT, Cristina's mom-to-be (who reminds me of Celia, kind of) took her eyebrows - it wasn't a (hilarious) dreaded mishap! (What woman hasn't had those nightmares?!)
Woohoo - Cash is coming back! And I saw a glimpse of Sam and Jane in the previews for next week too. Where did all of these self-righteous "Christians" come from? Please don't let Eric break his vow of abstinence - let Sarah stop him. I love that Ben owns a hockey team but the drama came too quickly - I'd love to see them watch some games at the bar (let's reopen that quick) and evaluate players in their own passionate, crazed hockey fan way (yes, I'm a hockey fan - Go Kings). That all being said, THANK YOU WRITERS for writing great story lines every week. Good luck in your quest for a fair contract - you deserve the best, for without you, what is there?
As usual, another GREAT episode of MIT that has left me begging for more. Can't wait until next week's continuation. Great job writers. I think I can speak for all of the MIT fans out there and say that we are really behind the writers during this strike, and are wishing for the best for you all. I'm also keeping a close eye on ABC and their shenanigans with this show this season. The first sign of them jerking us around again, and I'm getting out my pen and paper and will inundate them with snail mail. In the meantime, I'm as happy as a clam with these "final" 5 episodes from Season 1 and look forward to the beginning (technically) of Season 2. I said it before, and I'll say it again . . . BRAVO!!!!
My husband walked out and said, "this episode must be a little more serious than the last one"---He was only commenting that I wasn't rolling on the floor laughing out loud too much. What a nail-biting ending! I too wanted to see previews, but completely understood how that would give away the anticipation feeling.
We love the show and were very excited to see it come back another season! Thanks for keeping the tears coming--for laughter and sadness!
I loved it as usual!!! Am I the only one who noticed Cash walking back into town at the end? I yelled out a "whoop!" and did a happy dance that woke my whole family! Can't wait to see what happens next!
I have to agree with Meg, I am ready for Jack and Marin to get involved in different story lines so they can enrich their characters and hold off on the dream scenes and on again/off again things. They both have so much to offer it would be interesting to add dimension to their characters separate from each other. But I am like everyone else, can't wait for each episode. I love the show and EVERY character. I agree too- I miss Buzz!
The best part of the last episode was Cash coming back! More Eye Candy!
i am a newfound ADDICT of men in trees, and i am quite literally tearing my hair out over here hoping and praying that jack and marin will make it. and i do happen to be a grey's addict, but....they let me down. they sold out and the show suffered as a result. men in trees has done nothing of the sort to break my heart, and so i am very very happy to become a part of the men in trees fanbase, and i just want to say THANK YOU!! for making a show that is so so truly enjoyable to watch!
Great episode, lads. THRILLED to see Cash back. I'm probably the only one rooting for Cash & Marin to get/stay together. I've not liked Jack for quite a while now.
When he left Marin, albeit it was for altruistic motives but his character got uglier as time went by and I have to say that you guys will have to do a lot of work to get him back on my good side.
Thanks for the eyebrow comment above. I had thought about Yang's wedding too and glad to hear that you guys got there first.
Fantastic episode and they get better each week. I am so rooting for Sarah and Pastor Eric...I just love the two of them together. And like how you are showing the friendship between Marin and Sarah.
The way the Jack and Marin story is going makes sense especially for a small town. They are bound to run into one another and both have been hurt by the other so the reactions are quite normal, ie, Jack pulling back from the kiss.
BTW, glad to see you clarify for the GA nuts that this epi was written WAY before the GA scene where mama Burke had Cristina wax off her eyebrows on her wedding day. Most of those nuts probably don't watch a great show like MIT.
Hello. YOu know every week when the show ends, I say to myself, and then come here and write it "That was one of the best hours of television I've ever seen." And it just keeps getting better and better. I'm so excited to finally see what happens after the real first season finale! I think it's as unique as the show is to have a season finale in the middle of the season! I hated the idea last spring, but it's pretty cool now! Keep up the good work, no complaints. It's all good!
Another great episode!
I would love to hear about the process you use to select the music for the episodes.
Also, where do you shop for Marin and Annie's wardrobes? How about a blog entry from the costume designer?
Ok, are they all around the hospital bed of Domino Dan???????
This show is pure genius. I love how each of the characters continues to evolve! I can't wait until Friday night to cuddle up and watch what will happen next. I think what I love the most is how much I can personally relate to the characters in some way! Keep up the good work!
An amazing episode, and I have to say I was so glad to see Cash with his lopsided devilish grin returning to Elmo! You writers are so good at what you do every character you introduce becomes one I fall in love with. At first I was not so impressed with the reverend, but he is the next Elmo citizen whose spell I have fallen under. Glad Jack is going away... he really does not have a clue, does he? Perhaps his new boss can given him some lessons on women? What a cliffhanger! I love this show so much!
